Dental Exams

Dental exams are important to more than just your teeth.  A complete examination evaluates the teeth, bones, gums, and other soft tissues of the mouth.  Panoramic and intraoral x-rays are obtained every year to keep track of any changes that cannot be seen on the surface.  Finding potential problems before they become real problems helps reduce the pain and expense of future procedures.

Your dentist will need up-to-date information on your current medical conditions, medications, diet, and smoking history.  These can all affect your dentition and oral needs.

Dental health has been linked to overall medical health.  Regular dental examinations have led dentists to find evidence if medical conditions they were not aware they had, such as diabetes, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis which can show symptoms in the mouth.

Besides professional cleanings and oral hygiene education, a thorough examination checks for cavities or gum or bone disease.  Regular dental exams should be obtained every six months, even if you no longer have natural teeth.  Any dental appliances you use should be inspected and cleaned twice a year also.
